Life and Times of Allen P
Well as all good things come to an end so did high school, unfortunately I really didn’t realize it at the time, but it should have been the best time, I sometimes wonder about that. You are tempered by those around you or rather the lack of people as you march through life and the future unfolds.

After high school I went into the U.S. Army and spent 3 years there, it wasn’t too bad and probably help developed my character. After 3 years there I came back to Willows for a few months then got a job over in Chico. I liked Chico but I didn’t know anybody there. Then a job open up with the US Forest Service in all places Willows. I had been a radio Technician in the Army so I got on board as a Technician. That was probably one of the best jobs that I had. Going up into the mountains and taking care of the radio’s, not to bad. Then I applied for a job with Philco and got sent to the Artic and spent 1 year there. Unbelievably cold like 60 below zero and total solitude. So far north that I had to look south to see the Aurora Borealis. Now what would a guy like me be so far north. Operations and Maintenance of U.S. Air Force Satellite tracking station OL5 (POGO). Spending a winter in the Artic is not to be taken likely, anyway came next summer I was on my way to the Indian Ocean Tracking station (INDY). This is located on a very small island called Mahe, Seychelles. A thousand miles east of Mombasa, Kenya and 4 degrees south of the equator. Getting there was interesting, flying from Rome to Nairobi Kenya then a short flight to Mombasa. At that time it was just after Mao Mao up raising and independences. So things were still quit colonial and working fairly well. The flight to the Seychelles was something else again. The aircraft was an old Grumman HU16 amphibian; it was slow, noisy and had a glide angle of a rock. We made a water landing in the bay at Mahe. It was like stepping back into time, a place where progress and time had bypassed. This was still a crown colony of the defunct British Empire. But as normal the Yanks were now there and things were going to hell in a handbag. There were about 100 yank civilians and 3 air force types terrorizing the locals. The locals were English, French, Indians, Chinese, and Africans and there was a definite pecking order of how things got done. So I spent 4 years out on the Islands, during that time I went around the world and also got married to a French gal.

We came back to Willows in 1971 and then I went to the Pacific to the Marshall Island Group, Kwajalein Atoll, operating an earth terminal getting the pacific missile range data back to the Main land USA. I spent 6 months there. Came back to the States for a short time then headed for South Africa in 1975.

Africa. Depending on your point of view South Africa was well organized. Got a job with Motorola and work in South Africa from the Cape to the Transvaal. Then got transferred to Botswana. Now that was real bush and frontiers country. Not too much pave roads there. Spent four years there traveling all over the place. Then another transfer to Malawi where I install some fairly large communication systems and put together systems for the Presidential palace in Lilongwe. Spent 2 years in Malawi then another transfer back to South Africa to the homeland of the Transkei. I had been seconded to the government as the one and only Radio Techs. with the police. This was like another trip back into time. The whole country was involved in a war with the ANC and now I was in the middle of it, what a bummer. This is the place where I came close to being dinner for Cannibals, that is right cannibals. The wild coast of the Transkei is like Africa 250 years ago, there is dam little difference, except now they want there own government as long as they get someone to finance it. After a three year contract there I went back to Botswana to run the Motorola Company. Spent 2 years there and decided that we had better settle down where our sons could get a proper education so landed in between Johannesburg and Pretoria in Halfway house now called Mid Rand. So working out of Mid Rand and I was still traveling lots, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Angola. Now what was all this traveling about well putting in communication systems? Then I had a few side trips to Argentina, Mexico, UAE, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. In total I’ve been to about 50 countries and 27 states.

So now I’m located in Dallas Texas, I would rather be in Africa. I’m waiting for project to start up and I should be back out into another country. If I’m lucky I just might be at the 2005 class reunion. The year of 2005 was an interesting year I spent 4 weeks in Baghdad and another 4 weeks in Jamaica as different as chalk and cheese. It was dam cold in Baghdad when I got there, but I had fun going underground in the palace bunker. This was a neat place, no lights and total darkness, not for the faint hearted. Had to get out of the green zone three times to present a class on the microwave equipment that was a ride not to be forgotten thru downtown Baghdad. Jamaica was sort of a resort and vacation which wasn’t to bad except it was dam hot.

Well I didn’t make it to the reunion in 2005, but I’m now looking at 2006 reunion. Presently I’m located in Dhaka, Bangladesh a real backwater place with wall to wall people. I’m doing microwave inspection and auditing the sites, which are located in some very bad places. I have been to places that I’m sure no sober white man has ever been to in the old city of Dhaka. Spent some time out in the county side very close to the Indian border, still inspecting microwave sites. I got about 12 days to go then I should be on my way back to Texas. They like me so much that they may want me back for a big project, dam why me. It must be my winning personality."
