(Witness) HistoryJune 1868Obituary of George Adam Falor
"Died in this city, June 29th, of dropsy, after a protracted illness, Mr. George A. Falor, in the 70th year of his age.
Mr. Falor was born at Lower Smithville, Northhampton Co., Pa., July 17, 1798. Came to Ohio with his father's family in 1809, locating in Stark County, near Greensburgh. Five years later the family removed to this vicinity, locating upon the farm now occupied by Samuel Thornton, in the south part of this city. Remaining with his father until he was 25 years of age, he purchased of Joseph W. Brown the farm occupied for the intervening period as a homestead, just south of the present city limits, in the township of Coventry. Mr. Falor was three times married, his three wives being sisters, named respectively Nancy McCoy, Rachel McCoy, and Mrs. Jane Wilson, daughters of Mr. Samuel McCoy, a former resident of Coventry. He was the father of 17 children, 13 of whom are now living, and all, with the exception of one son now in California, living in this vicinity, by whom he was most assiduously nursed and cared for in his last protracted and painful illness, and by them laid quietly to rest in Mount Hope Cemetery, upon the farm where he had so long resided."

(Witness) History(Summary of information from military and pension records on file in the National Archives, Washington, D.C.)

George A. Falor, age 19, enrolled at Akron, Ohio, on Aug. 16, 1861 in Company A, Second Regiment Ohio Cavalry. He enlisted as a veteran volunteer for three years on Feb. 9, 1864 at Mossy Creek, Tenn. He was paid $60 bounty and was to receive an additional $340. He was discharged at Benton Barracks, Mo., on Sept. 11, 1865.

The muster rolls and his declaration for an invalid pension describe him at 5 feet, 7 ½ inches tall with hazel eyes, brown hair and dark complexion. Several documents indicated he was a farmer before entering the service and a laborer after his discharge. He was first listed as a corporal on the July-August 1862 muster roll.

Affidavits indicate that he served at Benton Barracks near St. Louis, Mo., under Dudley Seward who commanded Company A. Sometime early in 1862 on a march to Fort Scott, Kan., his company was exposed to wet, cold weather and Falor later blamed this for the rheumatism he suffered. In the first week of June, 1862, near Carthage, Mo., his horse fell on him, injuring his right side. He was reported sick in the post hospital at Camp Chase, near Columbus, Ohio, in November and December, 1862.

For one period from September through December, 1864, he was serving at a Remount Camp at Pleasant Valley, Md., and was on furlough in February, 1864 and June, 1865. A quartermaster voucher indicated he was paid $11.45 for transpiration from St. Louis to Akron on June 18, 1865.

He applied for an original invalid pension on Feb. 4, 1882 at the age of 40. The application mentioned “an injury in my rite side caused by my horse falling on me about the first of June 1862 near Carthage, Mo.” At one time, he was receiving four dollars a month pension. In a later pension declaration on April 14, 1898 he reported rheumatism, heart trouble, stomach trouble , the injury to his right side and partial paralysis of the left side of his body.

Harrison Crosier of Springfield Township, Summit County, Ohio, filed an affidavit which said: “ I was a member of the same Co. and Regt. With George A. Falor, enlisted at the same time and was discharged at the same time, being part of the time a bunk mate of his. At Benton Barracks, Mo., sometime in March 1862 he from exposure took a severe sole and contracted rheumatism and after that I often heard him complain of rheumatism and noticed his being lame. Said rheumatism troubled him until we were discharged from the service in Sept. 1865. I also remember that in the latter part of March and the forepoart of April 1865, he was so lame with rheumatism that he could hardly walk. I know that the above statement is true from personal observation as I was right with him.”

Falor went to work in the fall of 1865 for Aultman, Miller and Co. in Akron but his rheumatism made it difficult for him to handle lumber and coal or do hard labor.

(Note: He died Jan. 9, 1904 of pneumonia at this home on Sweitzer Avenue in Akron, Ohio survived by his wife and nine children. He is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Akron, Ohio)
