Oliver Perry Falor

“Oliver P. Falor, Born in City 90 Years ago, Dies.

Son of Pioneer Who Owned All Property Between Firestone and Goodrich Succumbs.

Had Interesting Career

Traveled Around Cape Horn to West as Youth, Then Returned East on Horseback.

A life that spanned events from pony express to radio came to a close Tuesday night when Oliver P. Falor, lifelong Akron resident and one of the outstanding pioneer figures of Summit county for years died at the home of his son, Fenrose Falor, 113 N. Highland Av., at the age of 90 years. His death was due to exhaustion.
He was born on Oct.28, 1835 in a log cabin, the site of which was directly opposite the present Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. office building. Born during the second administration of Andrew Jackson, Mr. Falor lived during administrations of 23 presidents.

                         Father Large Landowner
His father was a large landowner of the time and his possessions included all property from Firestone plant to the B.F. Goodrich Co. factory. Falor st., over which city officials and rubber company executives contested several years ago, was donated to the city by the elder Mr. Falor.
He was a member of a family of 18 children, and obtained his education in the public schools of the time. He was an ardent reader of travel stories and when 19 years of age felt the call of the road.
Leaving home he went to New York where he embarked on a ship which rounded Cape Horn and went to San Francisco. Here Mr. Falor purchased implements and tools and engaged in gold mining and the lumber business for three years.

                         Traveled by Ponies.
There being no railroads of west of the Mississippi river at the time, he purchased a pony and with a companion set out over the mountains and plains for the east. Traveling by day and camping with the sky as their roof, the two travelers reached the western terminal of the railroad where Mr. Falor placed his pony in a car and returned to his home.
A short time later he went to Council Bluff, where he organized a company to climb Pike’s peak. Instead the company went into “Bloody Kansas,” where they hunted deer, remaining on the plains for weeks at a time.
The company was on the prairie at the time of the most severe frost known in that part of the county and suffered considerably from the cold.
In the fall of 1859, Mr. Falor went to Massillon where he obtained a position in the warehouse of the Pittsburg., Ft. Wayne and Chicago railroad.
During the six years he was employed as a railroader he held various positions, one of which as that of conductor. During the Civil war Mr. Falor was conductor of the train which carried the first rebel prisoners over that road. There were 12 box car loads of Confederate soldiers who were taken east to a prison camp.

                         Married In 1868
In 1868 he returned to his home in Coventry, as it was then known, and purchased a farm, the present site of the Firestone rim plant. He married Miss Mary Weidman*, who died in 1884.
After farming for eight years, Mr. Falor opened a grocery in what is now South Akron and engaged in that business for 12 years when he returned to his farm. In 1886 he attended the G.A.R. national convention held in California.
He served on the Coventry school board and was supervisor and clerk of that township for several years. He also served as justice of the peace for 12 consecutive years.
Mr. Falor did not believe in debts and never contracted any. He prided himself in the fact that he never owed a nickel to another man.

                         Events Interested Him
Current events always held his attention and he was always posted on the news of the day. He liked to travel and usually spent his winters in Winter Haven Fla., or California.
Fraternal activities were also of interest to him and he was prominent in the Odd Fellows, being a member of Summit lodge, No 50, Akron Encampment and Canton Akron, Patriarchs Militant. He held high offices in those branches of the order.
Mr. Falor went to Florida in September this year but returned to Akron the following month because of illness and failing health.
He leaves three sons, Fenrose, Shelby A. and Clarence E., all of Akron, one brother, Tod Falor of Michigan and one sister, Mrs. Ella Acker of Akron.
Funeral services are to be held at the residence of Fenrose Falor, 113 N. Highland av. at 2 o’clock Friday. Akron lodges of the I.O.O.F. will be in charge. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery.

Research Note: * The name of Miss Mary Weidman maybe “Wakman”.”
